- In the early 1990’s, rappers in Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area started working on a new sound.
- They named it Hyphy. Hyphy is slang in the Bay Area which means to act in a hyper and exaggerated way.
- It had faster beats and focused on pounding rhythms. The lyrics and the music were fast-paced.
- New kinds of dance moves were made to dance to Hyphy music. The dancing was as hyper and exaggerated as the music.
- It became popular in the early 2000’s. In 2004 rapper Mac Dre was murdered. News of his death helped bring Hyphy into the mainstream.
- The Artist: Mac Dre was rapping in Oakland as early as 1989. He became popular in the early 2000s and was considered the biggest name in Hyphy until his murder in 2004.
